Columns On Friday Aug. 20 at 6:45 a.m., I received a phone call from a representative of Dana Mining concerning a problem in Dunkard Creek. The problem occurred when the discharge from Steele Shaft was reduced to comply with total dissolved solids (TDS) regulations. Dana Mining was concerned for the safety of the stream's quality. Recent technology mishaps reminiscent of Y2K +To put it mildly, the past few days have certainly been difficult for the Greene County Messenger. Following a power outage last Wednesday that knocked out electricity throughout downtown Waynesburg and some surrounding areas, our offices found themselves in the unenviable situation of dealing with major electronic malfunctions. As I have stated in past articles, I would do my best to keep up with the current environmental issues facing our area. Since Sept. 9, 2009, Dunkard Creek has been a focus of my concerns. Along with Dunkard Creek, the drilling for the large quantity of gas reserves found in the area has been in the forefront of many recent conversations. The gas drilling situation is to be addressed in a future article, but for now I would like to update you on the problems and possible solutions facing Dunkard Creek. +Well, it's official: The mayor of Texas, Annise D. Parker, owes Waynesburg a new hat after losing the 2010 Rain Day hat bet. For the 112th time out of the last 136 years, it rained on July 29 in the 'Burg, continuing a long-running - and admittedly strange - local tradition. Ballpark food more than expensive "It's against my religion to pay $8 for a beer." +Well, this week we are celebrating yet another Rain Day here in downtown Waynesburg, and I have to admit, throughout the three-plus decades that I have lived in Greene County I have always been amazed at the mindset behind this long-running traditional event. Recently, information about a situation has come to my attention. After attending several meetings concerning the water quality in our area, I have obtained knowledge about a problem that exists on Dunkard Creek.
